Bittensor is a decentralized network designed to incentivize the creation and sharing of machine intelligence. Its native token, TAO, serves as the primary medium for rewarding participants, securing the network, and governing the allocation of resources across various subnets.
Issuance Mechanism
The issuance of TAO is modeled after Bitcoin’s deflationary structure, utilizing a fixed maximum supply and a programmatic halving cycle.
- Maximum Supply: The total supply of TAO is capped at 21,000,000 tokens.
- Block Emissions: As of late 2024, 1 TAO is issued every block, which occurs approximately every 12 seconds. This results in a daily emission of 7,200 TAO.
- Halvening Cycle: The rate of issuance is reduced by 50% through a halvening event. The first halvening occurs once 50% of the total supply has been issued. Following this, the cycle resets; every time 50% of the remaining supply is issued, another halvening takes place.
- Recycling Mechanism: TAO tokens used for certain network actions (such as subnet registration fees) are "recycled." These tokens are removed from the circulating supply and returned to the unissued supply to be emitted again in future blocks.
Allocation Mechanism
Tokens are distributed across the network based on the Yuma Consensus, which aggregates the weighted opinions of validators to determine the value provided by different participants.
Root Network Allocation
The Root Network (SN 0) serves as the foundational layer. Validators on the Root Network vote to determine how the daily emissions are distributed across the various subnets (currently up to 32).
Subnet-Level Distribution
Once emissions are allocated to a specific subnet, they are further divided among three primary stakeholder groups:
| Stakeholder | Allocation Percentage | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Miners | 41% | Perform computational tasks or provide machine learning services. |
| Validators | 41% | Query and evaluate the work of miners to ensure quality and security. |
| Subnet Owners | 18% | The entities that created and maintain the specific subnet protocol. |
Validator and Delegator Split
Of the 41% allocated to validators, the rewards are typically shared with those who support them:
- Delegators: Receive approximately 82% of the validator's share.
- Validators: Retain approximately 18% as a commission for running the infrastructure.
Usage and Incentive Mechanism
The TAO token is central to the functional utility and competitive nature of the Bittensor ecosystem.
- Incentivization: Miners are incentivized to provide high-quality outputs (such as model responses or data processing) to earn TAO. Validators are incentivized to accurately grade these outputs to maintain their own reputation and rewards.
- Staking and Security: TAO is used in a Delegated Proof-of-Stake (dPoS) model. Users stake TAO to validators to secure the network and earn a portion of the inflationary rewards. As of December 2024, approximately 5.97 million TAO (roughly 80.95% of the circulating supply) was staked.
- Subnet Creation: To launch a new competition (subnet), users must pay a Subnet Creation Fee. This fee starts at a minimum of 100 TAO but fluctuates based on market demand and the rate of new registrations.
- Governance: TAO holders participate in the governance of the network. A "Dynamic TAO" proposal (BIT001) was introduced to allow holders to vote more directly on the proportion of emissions each subnet receives based on its perceived value to the ecosystem.
Locking Mechanism and Unlocking Time
Unlike many modern crypto projects that launch with heavy venture capital allocations and complex vesting schedules, Bittensor's distribution is primarily driven by active participation.
- Fair Launch Characteristics: Bittensor did not have a traditional Token Generation Event (TGE) with massive "unlocked" portions for investors or teams. Instead, tokens are "mined" into existence through the contribution of resources.
- Staking Liquidity: While tokens are "locked" when staked to a validator to earn rewards, the network generally allows for the delegation and redelegation of these tokens.
- Governance Control: The Opentensor Foundation utilizes Proof-of-Authority nodes to settle blocks and manage network upgrades through a triumvirate system, though the long-term roadmap points toward increasing decentralization through TAO-led governance.
- Supply Distribution: As of late 2024, the circulating supply was approximately 7.38 million TAO. Large portions of the "free" (unstaked) supply are held by major exchanges like Binance, which holds over 10% of the total circulating supply.
Bittensor(TAO)
(Total Supply):
(Circulating Supply):
(Max Supply):
通胀率(Inflation Rate):
