  • Vitalik Buterin proposed a hidden voice-triggered alert system.
  • The system could silently call police if crypto holders face robbery or kidnapping.
  • The system would activate when users say secret words, sending real-time location data to authorities.

Crypto wealth has created a new type of physical risk with holders with large wallets becoming targets for robbery and kidnapping.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin now says the industry may need a simple safety tool rather than complex blockchain fixes.

In a post on X, Buterin proposed a silent emergency alert system that could call police and send location data if a victim speaks a pre‑selected secret phrase. The idea is to make violent crypto theft far less attractive to criminals.

Secret Words That Trigger Emergency Alerts

Buterin said users could choose a few private words that act as a hidden alarm. If a phone, smartwatch, or home device hears those words, the device would quietly call emergency services and transmit the user’s real‑time location.

The system would work without any visible sign that an alarm has been triggered. Police could be on the way while a criminal still believes the victim has no way to call for help.

Buterin argued the system only activates if the victim intentionally speaks the phrase. Because of that design, he said the risk of government misuse would remain low.

The goal is to change the math for attackers. If criminals believe there is even a 20% chance that police are already on the way, the time needed to force wallet access or move funds becomes too risky. In that case, Buterin said this type of robbery becomes “non‑viable.”

Ethereum as a Public Bulletin Board

Buterin also said the crypto industry often overcomplicates what blockchains should do. After attending the Real World Crypto conference, he said developers should first think about the tools needed for open and secure digital systems before deciding where blockchain fits.

Cryptographic systems often need a shared data layer where records remain visible and tamper‑resistant. Examples include secure voting records, lists of revoked digital certificates, or data used in cryptographic protocols.

Ethereum can provide that function because anyone can publish data on the network and anyone can read it. Buterin described this model as a “global shared memory” that many applications can use at the same time.

Meanwhile, at the time of Buterin’s comments, Ethereum traded at $2,100, up about 6% over the past 30 days. The cryptocurrency has remained range-bound between $1,900 and $2,100 with analysts closely watching key levels.
