Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) is widening its appeal in the competitive compact SUV segment with the launch of the new XC40 B3 Essential. This entry-level derivative brings the Swedish brand’s signature blend of safety, design, and technology to a broader audience, with pricing starting at a highly competitive R750,000.

The B3 Essential proves that accessibility does not mean austerity.

It retains the core premium DNA of the award-winning XC40, offering a sophisticated ownership experience without the premium price tag. This strategic launch underscores Volvo’s long-term commitment to the local market.

Under the hood, Volvo Cars South Africa said the XC40 B3 Essential is powered by a responsive 2.0-litre four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol engine, delivering 110 kW and 265 N.m of torque. Paired with an efficient eight-speed Geartronic automatic transmission, power is sent to the front wheels, allowing for a 0–100 km/h sprint in 10.1 seconds. In line with Volvo’s global safety commitment, the top speed is electronically limited to 180 km/h.

Practicality is also a key focus.

With a 54-litre fuel tank and a combined fuel consumption figure of 7.1 L/100 km, the XC40 B3 Essential offers an estimated driving range of approximately 760 km, making it well suited to both urban commuting and longer-distance travel.

Visually, the newcomer makes a strong statement. It rides on 18-inch five-spoke glossy silver alloy wheels and features a fixed panoramic sunroof that floods the cabin with light. Inside, the focus is on comfort and premium materials. Standard specification includes Charcoal leather upholstery, though buyers may alternatively specify Premium Grey Melange City Block Textile at no additional cost.

Technology and convenience are also high on the list. The B3 Essential includes front and rear park assist, keyless entry with a hands-free powered tailgate, and a nine-inch infotainment system with Google built-in, incorporating Google Assistant, Google Maps and access to the Google Play Store.

Pricing for the XC40 B3 Essential starts at R750,000. For those looking to elevate their drive further, a selection of optional extras is available, including the Power Seats package (R9,200), Harman Kardon Premium sound system (R11,200), 360-degree camera (R23,700) and Pixel LED headlights (R25,400).

The R750,000 retail price includes Volvo’s five-year/100,000 km maintenance plan and warranty, as well as five years of unlimited roadside assistance. The XC40 B3 Essential is available on a to-order basis, with customers encouraged to contact their nearest Volvo dealership for further information.

The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For

The post The Channel Factories We’ve Been Waiting For appeared on BitcoinEthereumNews.com. Visions of future technology are often prescient about the broad strokes while flubbing the details. The tablets in “2001: A Space Odyssey” do indeed look like iPads, but you never see the astronauts paying for subscriptions or wasting hours on Candy Crush.  Channel factories are one vision that arose early in the history of the Lightning Network to address some challenges that Lightning has faced from the beginning. Despite having grown to become Bitcoin’s most successful layer-2 scaling solution, with instant and low-fee payments, Lightning’s scale is limited by its reliance on payment channels. Although Lightning shifts most transactions off-chain, each payment channel still requires an on-chain transaction to open and (usually) another to close. As adoption grows, pressure on the blockchain grows with it. The need for a more scalable approach to managing channels is clear. Channel factories were supposed to meet this need, but where are they? In 2025, subnetworks are emerging that revive the impetus of channel factories with some new details that vastly increase their potential. They are natively interoperable with Lightning and achieve greater scale by allowing a group of participants to open a shared multisig UTXO and create multiple bilateral channels, which reduces the number of on-chain transactions and improves capital efficiency. Achieving greater scale by reducing complexity, Ark and Spark perform the same function as traditional channel factories with new designs and additional capabilities based on shared UTXOs.  Channel Factories 101 Channel factories have been around since the inception of Lightning. A factory is a multiparty contract where multiple users (not just two, as in a Dryja-Poon channel) cooperatively lock funds in a single multisig UTXO. They can open, close and update channels off-chain without updating the blockchain for each operation. Only when participants leave or the factory dissolves is an on-chain transaction…
