Trust Wallet Reports Major Security Breach: How to Protect Yourself

Trust Wallet has confirmed a security incident affecting users of its browser extension. The announcement follows reports of unexpected fund losses on December 25.

The firm stated that the issue affected only the Browser Extension version 2.68.

Trust Wallet Alerts Users After Wallet Drains

According to Trust Wallet, users running version 2.68 should immediately disable the extension. They should then upgrade to version 2.69 via the official Chrome Web Store. The company emphasized that the issue did not affect mobile-only users or any other browser extension versions.

The announcement came after on-chain investigator ZachXBT flagged suspicious activity involving Trust Wallet users earlier the same day. ZachXBT reported that hundreds of wallets were drained within a short time window, with losses estimated at over $6 million at a minimum.

Blockchain data reviewed by the investigator showed a high frequency of immediate transfers from affected wallets. Hackers moved assets, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and BNB, almost instantly in each reported case.

Investigation Shows Coordinated Wallet Theft

Further analysis revealed that the stolen funds were routed through multiple receiving addresses, often following similar transaction structures. The repeated routing patterns suggested coordinated activity rather than isolated incidents. However, ZachXBT noted that tracking the full scope of the theft remains difficult due to the large number of intermediary addresses involved.

The investigator added that the suspicious activity appeared to cluster around the period following recent updates. ZachXBT also stated that users may receive compensation if Trust Wallet is found responsible. They emphasized that any conclusion would depend on the outcome of ongoing investigations.

Trust Wallet has not yet disclosed the technical cause of the breach. Users should upgrade immediately, revoke suspicious approvals, and monitor their wallets closely for unusual activity.
